Who We Are

The College was started by Dr. Rob Hewings and his wife Karen, both retired search dog handlers in the London Metropolitan Police force. While they continue to operate The College of Scent Dogs in the UK and regularly visit, we have been tasked with continuing their vision across the pond. We are the ONLY officially recognized College of Scent Dogs location in the US and maintain the standards set by Dr. Rob and Karen.

  • Dr. Robert Hewings, a retired dog handler and instructor who served for 30 years at the London Metropolitan Police. He has an impressive background in dog handling and training, backed up by excellent academic qualifications. He holds a BSc in Canine Training and Behaviour, a Masters's Degree in Professional Practice Police Dog Training, and a Doctorate of Professional Practice in Canine Scent Detection Training. He has lectured at universities both locally and internationally. Dr. Hewings is an expert in scent work and has unmatched skills in this area, as evidenced by his best selling books "Scent Training for Every Dog" and "Tracking for Every Dog”

Rob's passion for scent detection training is truly contagious! He has a unique talent for inspiring canines and their human companions to learn more. He is dedicated and enthusiastic about his craft, and he genuinely enjoys teaching and improving the skills of these remarkable animals.

  • Sam, a retired Philadelphia police officer, had just made settlement on his first house and he was thinking about getting a dog of his own. Having grown up with german shepherds his whole life, it only seemed right to get another shepherd. After speaking with his sister in-law, Sam promised her he would read the book, “Cesar's Way” by Cesar Millan. After reading the book Sam adopted a 5-month old german shepherd, Bandit, from Garden State German Shepherd Rescue. As an avid runner and health junkie, Sam began training and treating his dog in the same manner. Bandit has grown into a fabulous family and working dog, however, Sam's desire to continually educate himself about how and why dogs react the way they do was just getting started.

What started out as simple obedience training turned into researching different methods of dog training to get Sam more motivated to work. As he accomplished each step, he continually looked to challenge Bandit and himself more and more with different activities. Sam began researching canine behavior, and began to see other methods that are more appropriate other than the ways of Cesar Millan. He read book after book devoted to the history of dogs and how they are genetically wired. As his knowledge and experience began to plateau his training capabilities, Sam turned and started working with Joe Nick K-9 Training in Vineland, NJ and from there his skills blossomed. Joe used his 35+ years experience training every sort of dog, from bed bug detecting dogs to working law enforcement and military dogs. Working side-by-side with Joe for over 4 years and counting, Sam has gained the experience needed to begin pursuing his new found joy.

Sam also volunteers and gives back to the rescue that gave him his best friend. Sam took on the role as President and spent countless hours helping Garden State German Shepherd Rescue, restructuring their foundation and rebuilding. Sam spent time fostering and training dogs in preparation of reaching their final destination in adoption. He also helped coordinate events, took care of all their social media needs, and their fundraising. Sam has also helped several local rescues in the Philadelphia area with training and fostering dogs. In mid-2016, Sam stepped down as president because of his time restraints with his full-time job.

The more Sam learned about dogs, the more he realized that training and helping dogs is something he wanted to pursue as a career. His next step was to evaluate how to further his education and advance in his knowledge of training dogs to do specific behaviors. Sam pursued a Master’s Degree of Science in Canine Studies at Bergin University in Santa Rosa, Ca. In 2019, he graduated, and now uses the knowledge and training he obtained to better prepare himself to accommodate his clients in the best way possible.

Sam is a certified Dog Training Professional through the Certified Council for Professional Dog Trainers, Therapy Dog Evaluator through Therapy Pets Unlimited, a Canine Good Citizen Evaluator through the American Kennel Club (AKC). He is certified in Pet First Aid and CPR through Pet Tech™ and PET Emergency Education, LLC. In addition to this Sam is an avid Canine Conditioning Coach.

  • Instructor

Adrienne, was born and raised in metro Detroit. By 2000, Adrienne had worked as a veterinary assistant and attended the University of Michigan in a biochemistry undergraduate program, she had always wanted to be a veterinarian. On a whim, she moved to Portland, Oregon. In Portland, she started working for Dove Lewis Emergency Animal Hospital and sat for her national vet tech exam, becoming a certified veterinary technician (CVT). Adrienne realized that she could do as a technician everything that she had hoped to do as a veterinarian, from advocating for patients to comforting family members--and without a gazillion dollars in student loans. She also joined her first search and rescue team, Search One K9, as a wilderness air scent search and rescue as a dog handler, a move that would change the trajectory of her life. She fell in love with the partnership that developed between her and her dog. Watching her dog learn to love search and feel joy in finding people and the wonderful games that ensued afterward was chicken soup for her soul. The working dog bond is powerful, but it was difficult for her to watch trainers using harsh, coercive methods. Adrienne knew there had to be a better way, not just for her and her dog, but for all the other working dogs and handlers.

Adrienne found what she was looking for by reading, watching other trainers, and completing the Karen Pryor Academy's trainer program. A way to teach dogs anything and have it be fun for everyone, a way to see past the snarling, barking, lunging dog and find the sweet and scared soul beneath.

Adrienne has also completed a master's degree in service dog training from Bergin University and worked as a guide dog mobility instructor for Leader Dogs for the Blind. After graduation, Adrienne was the interim Dean for Bergin University, where she learned to love teaching other trainers. While completing her master's degree, Adrienne became friends with David, a team lead from the Mexico City UNAM search and rescue team, and now her husband. She also became close friends with Rob Hewings, who went on to form the UK College of Scent Dogs. Adrienne was lucky enough to present on search and rescue at the first UKCSD conference.

Adrienne now loves taking the skills, methods, and tricks she learned from all of those working and service dog training programs and bringing them to bear upon our furry house companions. She continues to find joy in creating happy teams, increasing compassion towards dogs, and being a crazy cat lady with only one cat.
